Long Distance Decor – Modern Rooms

September 28, 2012 By Vidya 6 Comments

Modern style of decorating is characterized by a very neutral palette often white, clean lines, and a minimalist look. With the lack of color and minimal accessories to ground the space the emphasis is usually on the furniture or on a large statement piece of art or architectural details.  It takes a very good interior designer to design a modern room that doesn’t have a stark, sterile, and cold vibe.

There is a dental office around here that has ultra modern decor. The few times that I’ve been in there I’ve gotten this uncomfortable feeling that I’m in an Austin Powers movie. Maybe it is me? The place has gotten rave reviews and has even been featured in international magazines.

Anyways, here is a look at a few rooms that I would feel at home (ok…..maybe not forever but for a few days for sure). 😉

The open floor plan layout, exposed ceiling beams, and the stone wall in this family room sorta gives the room a rustic charm.

Ample use of color through the art, the dark wood floors, and the architectural detail of the stairs add warmth to this other wise neutral space.

Again….white walls, white couch, high ceilings, and large scale of the accessories makes this room inviting.

Same design principles are mirrored in this sitting nook.

I’m not a big fan of light wood but the slightly darker bench and the touch of yellow in the next room does it for me.

Notice a pattern here? The paint color is almost always white. There is a strong stress on natural wood tones. The rooms have an open floor plan with high ceilings and lack window treatments! Yet they don’t feel uninviting. The wood tones and the natural elements add warmth to even a minimalist room.

Are you a fan of modern decor?

Ya, as I was going through the pics for this post there were a lot of rooms that just didn’t speak to me. I guess, I tend to look for warmth in every kind of room. That might explain all the similarities.

You are right, may be for a day or two, we could enjoy these rooms.

🙂 Don’t you think it is a lil strange coz nothing can showcase colorful art like a white back ground?

Me too Veda. Our older home was built in the 80’s when the ceiling height was 8 ft. The new home has higher ceilings. Can’t tell you how much of a difference that makes! All that light! In India too we are used to high ceilings.

Love this outdoor space with a beautiful red and blue outdoor decor with a flamingo pillow, metal tray side table, and loads of green plants

Finally the long overdue post, our new screened in porch reveal. This space has undoubtedly become our favorite room in the house now. To tell you the truth, I was against the idea of ripping apart our good size deck and replacing it with a screened in porch but B insisted that this was the…
